The most neglected stage: disposal — a device outside the inventory with its data is an open asset.

Review actual usage annually and compare with the licence count — many organizations pay for licences nobody uses.

الجرد اليدوي يتقادم بسرعة. استخدم أدوات اكتشاف تلقائي تكتشف الأجهزة والبرمجيات على الشبكة، وتربط الأصول بالمالك، وتُنبّه عند ظهور أصل غير معروف. اكتشاف أصل مجهول في الشبكة قد يكون مؤشراً على اختراق.Manual inventory ages quickly. Use automatic discovery tools that detect devices and software on the network, link assets to owners, and alert when an unknown asset appears. Discovering an unknown asset on the network may signal a breach.

An organization without an accurate inventory cannot demonstrate its controls — because it does not know what it is protecting. Inventory is therefore the first item requested in any IT audit and the first foundation of a security plan.
